How to plan and route Purchased Parts for additional Outside/Inside Services

Hi there, I am new to this Forum, and I'd like to apologize in advance for any mistakes. We are a manufacturing shop using M3 at version 10.1.11 on an IBM iSeries. We manufacture Large Valves and Actuators for the Power Industry. 80% of our item Master are Purchased Parts. The twist here that most of those parts will require additional services in-house or at a Vendor after they are received. Currently, we are managing this outside of M3. So, MRP will see a requirement to a Purchased  Read more...Component. It will generate the POP. The Buyer releases the POP to a PO. PO gets received and inspected and put on the shelf to be allocated to the demand. Is there a way for MRP to add an MO to the flow above (after the PO is received) where Operations can be added as part of the plan and execution? Maybe MRP generates an MOP as well without changing the acquistion code in MMS002 of the component from Purchased to Manufactured. Your help is much appreciated. Thank you. Show less...

Why not use different item #'s for pre-servicing and post-servicing items, with the post-serviced item being manufactured from the pre-serviced one? That way it flows through MRP seamlessly. CO demand generates an MO (maybe with subcontracting) for the "😜ost servicing" item and that MO then serves as the demand that triggers the PO for the pre-serviced item. Does that make sense?
Hi William, yes, it makes perfect sense and that's what I proposed as well. But it'll require a huge change of the Item Master and Numbering schema. It will also affect all Customers and Vendors that are used to our Part Numbers. Engineering, Sales and management shot it down. Any other ideas?
If your organization is not willing to change the acquisition method or add another item # then there really isn't a whole lot of options for taking advantage of the standard system functionality. I'm sure someone could build some custom functionality or a simple M3 extension that could do it. Otherwise, you're only left with half solutions like the ones I'm sure you're already using.
