Profit and Loss Statement -- Suggestions

We have been using M3 (formerly Movex) for many years.
We use RGS600 currently to create the P&L and that pulls information based on item group.
We currently use item group and product group in MMS001. We want to be able to create a report in a data tool that might also use other criteria that would allow us to look at other ways to view the P&L;
Examples:
Make vs Buy
By Product line (not currently defined in M3)
Based on Supplier etc.
If any company  Read more...has done something like this or runs their P&L in other ways; we are looking to hear helpful hints or any landmines encountered.
If we were going to start using other fields in the item master what would you use or avoid?
